Freightliner Trucks is an industry leader in the development of passive and active safety systems. When it comes to vocational trucks, not only must the vehicle have advanced safety systems for operating as a truck moving from job to job, it must be up to the special challenges of busy and congested work sites.

Optimizing operator visibility on busy job sites is a key safety component that Freightliner Trucks are recognized for achieving. “We also pride ourselves on industry-leading visibility from the cab. Freightliner’s vocational trucks come equipped with numerous available safety features and ergonomically designed, well-insulated cabs. Driver comfort during a long work day contributes to reducing fatigue and improved safety.

“Cab comfort and ease of entry for the driver is of utmost importance. Workers are in and out of these cabs all day, and many of these guys are tall and robust,” said Howerton. “Our Freightliner vocational trucks offer low cab heights, non-slip steps and grab handles to make getting in and out easier and safer.”

Another key safety feature available on most Freightliner Trucks is the SmartPlex® electrical system which offers customizable interlocks that help operators perform their jobs safely. SmartPlex is designed to link the engine, transmission and body through the bulkhead module. Parameters can be set, for example, that will not allow the truck to move with its boom out of stow or sound an audible warning if the parking brake is not set when the driver leaves the cab. SmartPlex can also reduce maintenance costs. For instance, SmartPlex can automatically slow windshield wiper speeds on a truck that has its parking brake set, preserving the life of the wiper blades.
